What this discourse is really about

mn78:gu:0003

This sutta starts with a question about ritual offerings for the dead but quickly reveals something much more profound: what it means to truly complete the spiritual journey. A brahmin asks the Buddha whether offerings to deceased relatives actually help them, and the Buddha's answer is refreshingly practical—sometimes yes, sometimes no, according to the texts, depending on where they've been reborn.

mn78:gu:0004

But then comes the real teaching. The brahmin asks what constitutes the fulfillment of spiritual life, and the Buddha's answer is direct: letting go of greed, hatred, and delusion. The essence of spiritual completion is removing everything that causes mental suffering and confusion.

mn78:gu:0005

The Buddha then offers the Noble Eightfold Path as the way to achieve this letting go. True spiritual fulfillment requires training the whole person—how we see, intend, speak, act, make a living, apply effort, stay aware, and concentrate our minds. All aspects must be developed together for complete liberation.

Key teachings

mn78:gu:0007
  • Conditional effectiveness of offerings: According to the texts, ritual offerings only benefit beings reborn as hungry ghosts; those in hell cannot receive them, and those in heaven do not need them
mn78:gu:0008
  • The giver always benefits: Regardless of whether offerings reach their intended recipients, the act of giving itself creates positive karma for the giver
mn78:gu:0009
  • True spiritual fulfillment: The complete spiritual life means abandoning greed, hatred, and delusion—not performing rituals or accumulating merit
mn78:gu:0010
  • The path to freedom: The Noble Eightfold Path provides the comprehensive training needed to abandon the three root poisons
mn78:gu:0011
  • Holistic practice: Spiritual completion requires developing right understanding, ethics, and mental cultivation together
mn78:gu:0012

Common misunderstandings

mn78:gu:0013
  • "Rituals are useless": The Buddha doesn't dismiss offerings entirely—they can help some beings and always benefit the giver through cultivating generosity
mn78:gu:0014
  • "Just let go and you're done": Abandoning greed, hatred, and delusion requires systematic training through the eightfold path, not just willpower
mn78:gu:0015
  • "It's all about meditation": True fulfillment needs the whole path—ethical conduct, mental cultivation, and wisdom working together
mn78:gu:0016

Try this today

mn78:gu:0017
  • Notice the three poisons: Throughout your day, catch moments when greed (wanting more), hatred (pushing away), or delusion (not seeing clearly) arise in your mind
mn78:gu:0018
  • Practice one path factor: Choose one aspect of the eightfold path—such as right speech or right effort—and pay special attention to it for the entire day
mn78:gu:0019
  • Give without attachment: Make an offering or act of generosity today, focusing on the joy of giving rather than what you might get in return
